Windsor Stool
This stool was an exercise in rapid design iteration and Windsor chair-making processes.
It was constructed in the summer of 2023 at the Anderson Ranch Art Camp and was taught by Aspen Golan. The entire process took four days, from the design brief, “sketch 30 three-legged stools,” to the assembled stool. After pencil sketches, we moved quickly to tiny 3d models made from clay and toothpicks. This stool was originally inspired by the seat from a playground swing set. The design evolved in real time as we fabricated the parts and learned to drill tapered mortises at precise angles. Although the final stool may look intimidating, it is surprisingly comfortable. The stool is finished with three colored layers of milk paint, sanded back in places, and rubbed out with beeswax.
